ScreenshotsFeel free to look over this page for screenshots of Aktub's various features. Hopefully they will leave you with a better understanding of how Aktub operates. You may click on any of the thumbnails below to view a larger version.
As a user-friendly application, Aktub is easy to navigate around. The screenshot below shows the central menu screen which allows users to choose between alphabet tutorials, vocabulary training, and typing practice.
Aktub includes a series of "Flashcard Levels" which walk you through every letter of the alphabet, the diacritic markings, the short vowels, and the numerals. After completing this levels, you have been casually introduced to the location of every character on the keyboard. You also have the option to re-play them in a "typing" sense where you will be asked to type the name of the letter, rather than its actual value, to proceed to the next card.
Kitab also includes levels for practicing memory recall of the positions of the individual letters. These levels do not test speed, but accuracy, and are intended for reinforcing familiarity with the keyboard layout.
For practicing speed, Aktub offers speed-touching levels which are similar to most typing tutors for the English language. These levels feature an upper bar that prompt the user to type the displayed text; the middle bar displays the keys that the user has successfully entered; and the lower bar displays an English translation if available. Among others, the themes available are Arabic proverbs and a selection of Nizar Qabbani poems.
Aktub is indispensable for students who are currently learning the Arabic language. The "falling word" levels are a hybrid intended for both improving typing speed and memory recall of the keyboard, as well as enhancing the user's comprehension of Arabic vocabulary. Because these words are frequently used in the Arabic language, they will come in handy when typing in Arabic on other venues on the Internet or elsewhere. The vocabulary used in this type of level is determined by the user, who can opt to have them displayed by grammatical function (nouns, verbs, etc), or by theme. The theme below revolves around words frequently used in the media.
Finally, Aktub features a number of games which apply the ideas behind the "Falling Word" levels to other entertaining scenarios. In one game, the user must type words quickly and accurately enough to assist in the construction of pyramid. In another level, the user must type words to reveal a hidden background photo. To win this puzzle level, the user must guess what the image in the photograph is. The photograph and pyramid games are both shown below.
